Barbara: Update One

Barbara as a young girl in Milwaukee
As you may know, our mother Barbara has been in a battle against various forms of cancer for the past five years.  Originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, she received treatment and was successfully winning that fight when she then was diagnosed with a late stage of inoperable lung cancer.  She pulled herself up, cursed herself a few times for a forty year smoking habit, and stepped into the ring.

The lung cancer treatment has been ongoing since 2009, requiring the deployment of chemotherapy and radiation, an often debilitating combination of approaches that can force the strongest of people to succumb.  Mom, however, has continued to soldier on.  Until early this winter she was still going to work (at age 78), volunteering at the Shorewood Public Library, and hanging out with friends at Gilda's Club, whose meetings at the Milwaukee Jewish Community Center Karl Campus have been a source of great comfort and strength.  Not really a person to dwell on her feelings, Barbara focused on arts and crafts projects, teaching her friends a handy trick or two with baskets, knitting, and making DIY greeting cards.  Until recently she was an excellent gardner, knitter, needlepointer and, while raising her children, a conjurer of homemade clothes for her kids.  So, you know, she has what to say on these matters.

Late in the autumn and into the winter of 2012, Mom began experiencing new pains and her doctors determined that the breast cancer, which we thought had been defeated, had in fact metastasized into leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, a particularly virulent form of cancer that attacks the spine and brain.  Needless to say, this was depressing news for Mom.  "Can you blame me for thinking that I was going to defeat this thing?" she said recently.

Last week Mom asked if we'd create occasional posts, updates and other such news on a blog and so here you have it.

Really, what she'd like is for you, her friends and neighbors, to be able to get periodic updates on her condition and have a space to leave comments, prayers, and good wishes, which she'll read or have read to her.

At various stages in this five year battle, we got her a cell phone (she hated it and rejected it) and tried convincing her of the merits of a laptop or iPad (zero interest).  Her appetite for working her way through her reading list (from books printed on paper and held in her beautiful hands) and devotion to the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club (television with the sound down, Uecker on the radio) remain unimpaired.  She remains an avid political animal and looks forward to casting her recall vote against Governor Walker.

Mom would like nothing more than for you to share a thought, a wish, a prayer that can bring a smile to her face.  Please feel free to do that in the comments section here on this blog and we'll make sure she knows you're sending your love.

And remember to check back for periodic updates.

With deep gratitude for all your concern and good wishes.

Robin, Jackie, Andy & Steven

  3. Hi Nana! My favorite part of Christmas day has always been you show up with so many bags of presents that several of us kids have to come help you carry them in the house. Thinking of and praying for you everyday! Love you.

  4. Nana-

I will be thinking of you everyday, especially today as I watch the brewers, even though they're the worst team ever.
Miss you and see you in a few weeks.

I miss you so much. Two hours is much too far away. I cant wait to see your smiling face every day this summer when I walk the kids by your building. We can go to Anaba or city market for my lunch breaks, or I could just bring a bag lunch and watch the game with you. See you soon. I love you.

  9. Dear Aunt Barby- I have been thinking of you SO much lately. I want you to know how important you were for me back when I was 12 and awkward. I felt so comfortable with you. I loved listening to you laugh in your kitchen. I have so many memories of you and feeling like I had another layer of family outside of my core family. My favorite Thanksgiving with you was showing up with Carly when she was 2 days old. Do you remember that? I loved that you seemed always so chill and funny. I imagine you much this way now. I feel sick for you that you have this cancer. I love Robin’s writing and your idea for this blog. Now I can send you well wishes. Hang in there- your sense of humor certainly is enough to keep you positive. I love you. Lisa

  12. Hi Barbie,

I don't know what happened to my first blog. Hope you get this one. Just so you know I was next to Bizzie. I guess it's my talented tech skills.
How great to get this uptodate report. Some bits and pieces I remember - your delicious mince pie that Lisa thought was mint pie!! Great dinners and Bachman 50th anniversary. Your mom was there too! How I thought you were the greatest seamstress in the world and couldn't believe all the outfits you made for the kids. I remember you spent way too much time in the kitchen. Tonight Lisa made a fantastic tomato basil soup and a chicken salad. Antonio's mom is here for a month and it's quite an evening when some are speaking English, some Spanish and some translating. Alan struggling - probably a defibrillator and dialysis in the near future. We are enjoying are new apt. a very large patio with many vines, a mandevilla that is beginning to bloom and a red geranium. You were always so good with flowers and I'm just happy when I can keep one alive for a growing season. Hope the new treatment is doing some good. I send energy impulses to you on a regular basis. Keep up your spirits with a good book, Major Pemberton's Last Stand. Now I am reading A Tiger's Wife, but I find watching British detective mysteries on Netflix my greatest reality escape. Lots of love and hugs for now. karenxo

  13. Hey Nana!

It's pretty late right now. I should be in bed. But of course, I'm looking through the freezer for some Culvers ice cream. Chocolate Covered Strawberry flavored to be more specific. Then I realized I ate it all last night. Oops! I hope we get to go get some together soon! I could go for some Benji's too. Matzoh Ball soup and a half of a corn beef sandwich sounds perfect right now. You are very strong Nana. I pray for you every day in my religion class. I hope you are better very soon. One of my dress straps ripped right off and lets face it: as good as Mama is at sewing things back together, this is a nana job. I hope you have a good Monday tomorrow! Mondays are never good, but I'm sure yours will be fine. Maybe Mama and I can drop some food off for you after school!

    Thinking of you always,

    Annie <3 xoxo

  14. from Robin's neighbor, Patrice Mahon: "Hello Barbara,
I think we should start a mutual admiration club. You have been my supporter for so many years. I still remember the brisket you made for a very long time ago. You are such a sweetheart. I think it is time for another Stone Creek run. Could you bring me the brisket recipe? Who knows, maybe someday I can return that favor. Just know that it might be as good as yours.
    You fellow warrior,
    Patti"

  17. Dear Babs,

Allen Keller and I are in San Diego about to watch your True Blue Brew Crew crush the San Diego Padres. We both miss you and are thinking about you. We promise to catch a ball in your honor even if we have to trample over a group of four-year olds.

    Love,

Your Milwaukee boys out in California - Steve and Allen

  18. Hi Barbara - this is Andy's friend and neighbor (in that order) Josh Kranz in Brooklyn. We've only met a couple of times but I've heard plenty of warm and wonderful stories about you. Rest assured that Andy has established a Brew Crew outpost in Park Slope, new recruits always welcome. About 5-6 years ago I got to make a pilgrimage to Lambeau Field with Andy and Steven, and even now I still laugh spontaneously when I remember one of the remarkable number of funny and weird moments we crammed into that weekend. Visiting you while we were there was neither funny nor weird, but it was memorable. Thank you and best wishes.

  21. Well, it was a big weekend here in Texas. Carly is here from Africa, Lisa's friend Tina is here from Indiana, Antonio's mother is visiting from Spain and Agus' boyfriend is also here from Spain. All for the graduation of Agus from UT and Alexa from high school. A big celebration last night with lots of singing and music. Alan stayed awake for all of it. The Cepedas leave Texas to go to Vermont on July 7 where he will be the Dean of Arts and Sciences at UVM. Alan and I will stay here where it's warm, I mean hot!! Sending lots of love and hugs and healing energy. krnxo(can you pronounce my nickname?)

  22. Hello dear Barbie,

Someone tore my Obama sign off my rear bumper so I guess I've had enough of Texas. Lisa bought a home yesterday. They will close on it July 17th. Google 200 Sicklen Road and then choose one of the ads to see what it looks like! Alan had 2 pints of blood today and his second procrit shot. Hoping this will help his tiredness and weakness. I wonder if your treatment is helping you with your continuing struggle. Must check now on the WI Boys' State tennis tournament. Prayers and energy. krnxo

  23. Alan is in the hospital. Blood thinner Pradaxol was killing him. Now they have to wait it out since there is no antidote. With Warfarin they can give VitK. I just finished my breakfast and thought of you, as I do every day. No word from Robin lately. I have retreived at least 20 crickets from my apt. Texas is having an invasion. This morning I heard on one in the kitchen. I think he was in the cupboard above the frig but I didn't want him hopping out on me so I ignored his singing. Here in TX they talk about killing them. I try to release them back outside. Love and many hugs, karen
